Red Rum - Honouring a Local Hero

Since 1979, the Wayfarers Shopping Arcade has also been home to a bronze statue of Red Rum, created by sculptor Annette Yarrow and funded by public donations.

The local steeplechasing legend, Red Rum, was trained in Birkdale Village and on the sands at Southport by local trainer Ginger McCain.

Red Rum has an unequalled record with his 3 wins (1973, 1974 and 1977) and 2 seconds (1975 and 1976) in the world's most famous steeplechase, the Grand National, held at nearby Aintree.

Red Rum died in 1995, and is buried at the winning post at Aintree Racecourse.

Red Rum headed the polling for the John Smiths Grand National Legends, and was officially inducted as a legend of the Grand National at the 2010 race on Saturday April 10th 2010 in a ceremony at Aintree.

Many people still visit the statue in the Wayfarers Shopping Arcade with fond memories of a horse that became an international household name.
