Year Key Event
2009 Upgraded new café, Pudding & Pie opens in time for peak Christmas trade.
2008 1950’s asphalt floor replaced with new terrazzo tiles, incorporating original mosiac edging and new design features. Party to celebrate this final part of £2m investment held in the Arcade with tenants, suppliers, local dignatories and special performance from "Vercoe" the world famous clown.
2004-7 Focussed investment on replacing and French polishing mahogany shop fronts, unifying sign writing in heritage font and colours and improving signage for visitors.
2001 Investment to replace barrel vaulted glazed roof, 13m span, one of the largest in the UK.
1980's Investment to restore central dome in roof and current Multiyork units, previously part of Wayfarers Arts.
1976 Wayfarers Shopping Arcade head lease acquired by Anthony Pedlar, MD and re-named Wayfarers Shopping Arcade.
1950' s Purchased by the tailors Montague Burton and re-named the Burton Arcade. Burtons undertook major restoration, replacing original pitch pine block floor with asphalt.
1939 With the outbreak of World War II, the domed roof was painted black as part of black-out precautions, and the tropical fish aquarium had to go to save electricity.
1926 The Wayfarers Arts shop commenced trading on Lord Street, owned by Vyvian Pedlar and his sister Evelyn.
1898 Leyland Arcade opens, the brainchild of entrepreneur John Humphrey Plummer.
